Building Drawing and Detailing Laboratory

Building Drawing and Detailing Laboratory

Objective:

The primary objective of the Building Drawing and Detailing Laboratory is to equip civil engineering students with the fundamental skills in producing and interpreting engineering drawings for building construction. This includes understanding conventional drawing practices, mastering the use of drafting tools (both manual and CAD software), and effectively communicating structural and architectural details for various building components, thereby bridging the gap between design concepts and construction realities.

Outcomes:

Students will be able to:

  • Understand and applyconventional drawing standards, symbols, and abbreviations used in civil engineering and architectural drawings (including relevant Indian Standards).
  • Produce clear and accurate architectural drawings such as plans, elevations, sections, and site plans for various types of buildings, incorporating dimensions, annotations, and material specifications.
  • Generate detailed structural drawings for reinforced concrete (RC) and steel elements, including footings, columns, beams, slabs, and walls, showing reinforcement details, bar bending schedules, and connection details.
  • Utilize Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software(e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) proficiently to create, modify, and manage complex building drawings and models.
  • Interpret and extract information from a set of building drawings and specifications for construction planning, quantity estimation, and quality control purposes.
  • Develop detailing skills for various building components, understanding the practical implications of design decisions on constructability and performance.
  • Effectively communicate design intentions and construction requirements through professional-quality engineering drawings.
  • Adhere to industry best practices and ethical considerations in drafting and detailing to ensure clarity, accuracy, and completeness of drawings.
